SUNSHINE FANDOMS

So what is a fandom? According to Wikipedia, a fandom (from the noun fan and the affix -dom, as in kingdom, dukedom, etc.) is a term used to refer to a subculture composed of fans characterized by a feeling of sympathy and comradeship with others who share a common interest. This interest is that of a shipper (people involved in shipping).

Shipping, derived from the word "relationship," is a general term for emotional and/or intellectual involvement with the ongoing development of romance in a work of fiction. Though technically applicable to any such involvement, it refers chiefly to various related social dynamics observable on the Internet, and is seldom used outside of that context. Shipping can involve virtually any kind of relationship — from the well-known and established, to the ambiguous or those undergoing development, and even to the highly improbable and the blatantly impossible. Shippers assert that the relationship does exist, will exist, or simply that they would like it to exist.

Here are some of the most notable Sunshine fandoms
according to the fans at our Sunshine Fan Forum:

*SPOILER WARNING*
Please be aware that the following text may contain spoilers that reveal vital plot details.
Read at your own discretion.

MASSIE
Characters: Mace and Cassie
Actors: Chris Evans and Rose Byrne
Support: In Cassie's backstory, it is revealed that four months before the mission left Earth Orbit she became pregnant. Cassie terminated the pregnancy after six weeks with only Searle knowing the identity of the father. Due to the chemistry between Mace and Cassie in the movie, there is much positive and confident speculation that Mace was the father to Cassie's unborn child. Also, according to Mace's backstory, whenever he reminisces about his dreams, "he’d find, to his surprise, that he often dreams of Cassie."

Movie Scenes:
After Harvey and Captain Kaneda explain the impending loss of communication with Earth, Mace comments that the crew has been alone all along. Cassie looks at him as if she believed otherwise. (As a matter of fact, in every scene where Mace declares that they are completely alone, Cassie looks at Mace with an ambiguous sadness.)

After Captain Kaneda locates the coordinates where the Icarus I distress signal is coming from (and ultimately the stranded Icarus I spaceship), Mace argues that the team should not make the detour and continue the mission because nothing else is more important. He supports Searle's claim that the Icarus I team's lives are expendable, including their own. Again Cassie looks at Mace sadly.

Mace helps Cassie pilot the Icarus 2 while Captain Kaneda and Capa are fixing the heat shield outside.

During the "Voting Scene," Mace demands an unanimous vote on whether or not to kill Trey. When Cassie objects, Mace gives her a sympathetic look.

DELETED SCENE: In the flight deck, Mace is seen sleeping in his chair while Cassie is reading a novel (Lady Chatterley's Lover). Mace's foot accidently turns the dial on a control panel and redirects the coolant. Cassie fixes the problem as if it was commonplace. The scene ends with a focus on the sleeping Mace, who supposedly dreams of Cassie.

DELETED SCENE: Mace and Cassie are seated in the flight deck. When Mace reminds her about an important detail regarding the docking procedure, Cassie snaps at him. Afterwords, a computer monitor flashes the word 'separation' as if suggesting that Mace and Cassie have separated from a relationship.

DELETED SCENE: Cassie and Corazon communicate with Harvey, Searle, Mace and Capa while they are suiting up. Before they leave Icarus 2, Mace in particular stares into the video camera as Cassie talks to them.

CAPSIE
Characters: Capa and Cassie
Actors: Cillian Murphy and Rose Byrne
Support: Although its support is weaker than Massie, this fandom is popular because of Mace's initial rivalry (and perhaps jealousy) towards Capa. Capa and Cassie appear to enjoy each other's company and share a strong friendship. In the beginning stages, the script included a "love scene" between Capa and Cassie in the Oxygen Garden. However, it was cut altogether since director Danny Boyle thought romances did not get positive criticism in sci-fi films. Cillian Murphy also rejected the idea since he claimed that his character would never be romantic in the situation he was placed in.

Movie Scenes:
Cassie comforts Capa when he awakes from his nightmare. She tells him that she supports his decision to go off-course even though Mace, Trey and Harvey don't.

Cassie helps Capa into his golden spacesuit and eases his nerves.

Cassie joins Capa in the payload room and confides in him her fear about the mission. Capa explains his stellar bomb to her.

When the power fails on the Icarus 2, Cassie tries to contact Capa first.

Capa runs to the wounded Cassie on his way to the payload room. He lifts her head up and tries to get a response from her.

Cassie saves Capa from the grasp of Captain Pinbacker. She then encourages him to complete the mission in her final breath.

DELETED SCENE: Capa enters the Medical Bay where Cassie is watching the sedated Trey. Capa tries to comfort her, but the dark circumstances that the crew is under has depressed Cassie. When she leaves the Bay, she looks back at Capa.

DELETED SCENE: As Capa is trying to get into the payload chamber, Pinbacker talks to him. The Icarus 1 captain explains how hard Cassie fought before she died among other things. This scene highlights Cassie's final act that saved Capa.

HARVSIE
Characters: Harvey and Cassie
Actors: Troy Garity and Rose Byrne

TRESSIE
Characters: Trey and Cassie
Actors: Benedict Wong and Rose Byrne
Support: Cassie has a special emotional attachment to Trey in the film. She sympathizes him during his mental breakdown when very few (if any at all) actually did.

Movie Scenes:
In the "Voting Scene," Cassie is the only crew member who refuses to kill Trey.

DELETED SCENE: Cassie watches Trey in the Medical Bay. He is sedated since he poses as a suicidal threat. She looks at him with deep concern and sympathy.

KANEZON
Characters: Kaneda and Corazon
Actors: Hiroyuki Sanada and Michelle Yeoh
Support: There is little to no evidence of a possible relationship between this pair. Kaneda may be a bachelor, but Corazon is married and seems preoccupied with her much beloved Oxygen Garden. However, these two actors starred in another movie together in 1986 called Royal Warriors (screencaps may be found HERE). In this film, Michelle Yip (Michelle Yeoh) and Peter Yamamoto (Hiroyuki Sanada) suffer similiar losses which draw them together in the end. Their on- and off-screen chemistry suggests a perfect relationship.

Movie Scenes:
Captain Kaneda and Corazon are seated next to each other in the scene where Searle describes his solar experiment in the Social Area. Kaneda helps Corazon set the table. She also pours him a glass of water while she is talking to Searle.

Corazon joins Captain Kaneda in the Observation Room. Kaneda smiles mildly at her when she makes a remark about Searle. When Kaneda remains silent, Corazon talks to him in a concerned tone.

When the alarm sounds on the Icarus 2, Captain Kaneda runs down the corridor towards the flight deck with Corazon following behind him.

CORVEY
Characters: Harvey and Corazon
Actors: Troy Garity and Michelle Yeoh
Support: They both hold an appreciation for Oxygen Gardens; Corazon because of her profession and Harvey because of his will to survive. Although they are both married, Harvey and Corazon have a good friendship even if it is not one of the more obvious ones seen in Sunshine.
Fanfiction Link: HERE

Movie Scenes:
As soon as Captain Kaneda confirms that he and Capa can successfully close all four propped panels on the heat shield, Harvey and Corazon hug each other in celebration.

Harvey locks down several sectors that lead to the burning Oxygen Garden on the Icarus 2 in order to contain the fire and to protect the distressed Corazon.

When Harvey reports on the flourishing Oxygen Garden onboard the Icarus 1, Corazon smiles for the first time since she lost her own garden on the Icarus 2.

MARAZON
Characters: Mace and Corazon
Actors: Chris Evans and Michelle Yeoh
Support: According to Corazon's backstory, Mace is her natural ally. They both work with their hands despite their differences in temperament. Most importantly, they are not sentimental. Corazon later refers to her fellow crew members as "breathers" while Mace consistently reminds them that nothing is more important than completing the mission.

Movie Scenes:
Corazon laughs when Mace leaves the Oxygen Garden without properly apologizing to Capa.

When Icarus adjusts to the new angle that Trey calculated, Corazon comments on how bad the spaceship sounds. Mace explains what is happening and Corazon chastises him.

Corazon confides in Mace and Cassie her thoughts regarding Harvey's slanted assessment on the O2 productivity.

Corazon votes with Mace to kill Trey.

SEARUS
Characters: Searle, Icarus and Jennifer Esteves
Actors: Cliff Curtis and Chipo Chung
Support: The term 'Icarus' refers to both the computer mainframe which controls the spaceship and the Icarus I crew member Jennifer Esteves who voices it. In the film, it can be assumed that Searle conducts his solar experiments alone, save for the sweet-voiced Icarus. Since she is all-knowing, Icarus provides a valuable asset to Searle in his exploration of the physical and psychological effects of the Sun. Zimbabwean actress Chipo Chung provides a face to Icarus as she is shown briefly in the film as Jennifer. In Voice of Icarus, a behind-the-scenes video on SunshineDNA, it was revealed that she accompanied the actors on set so they have someone to react off of when Icarus talks to them.
Fanfiction Link: HERE

Movie Scenes:
In the beginning of the film, Searle is seen observing the Sun at a low filter level in the Observation Room. Icarus establishes herself as a useful source of information.

CAPARLE
Characters: Capa and Searle
Actors: Cillian Murphy and Cliff Curtis
Support: It is confirmed in Capa's backstory that "the relationship between [Capa and Searle] is actually the strongest bond in the crew." They are both loners, sharing the same language and similar sense of humor.
Fanfiction Link: HERE

Movie Scenes:
Before they begin suiting up, Searle and Capa share a moment in the Observation Room as they watch Icarus 2's approach to the Icarus 1.

Searle relieves Harvey of his duty to stay behind on the Icarus 1 and ultimately sacrifices himself to save Capa.

DELETED SCENE: Searle replaces Cassie in the scene where Capa is testing the payload and explaining how it works.

MAPA
Characters: Mace and Capa
Actors: Chris Evans and Cillian Murphy
Support: Perhaps the most popular male pairing in Sunshine, Mapa celebrates the rivalry, friendship and/or love between Mace and Capa. Their relationship is memorable throughout the movie.
Fanfiction Link: HERE

Movie Scenes:
Mace and Capa fight when the solar wind goes high enough to end all communication with Earth. Mace provokes the fight since he was unable to send a message whereas Capa sent multiple messages to his family members.

Mace goes to Capa to apologize, but ends up leaving without having said a word. Capa seems to understand and accepts his "apology" nonetheless. Corazon laughs at the two of them.

Mace volunteers Capa to accompany Captain Kaneda on a mini-mission to fix the heat shield.

Capa is immediately given the golden spacesuit onboard the Icarus 1. Mace admits that Searle, Harvey and himself are a lower priority.

Capa agrees with Mace that Trey should be killed.

Mace and Capa fight a second time when Mace discovers that Trey committed suicide in the Earth Room.

Mace discovers Capa trapped in the airlock and communicates with him as he tries to repair the damage on the Icarus 2. Mace's last words are those of encouragment to Capa.

Capa walks through the Icarus 2 with the golden spacesuit on and stops to see Mace one last time.

MAPSIE
Characters: Mace, Capa and Cassie
Actors: Chris Evans, Cillian Murphy and Rose Byrne
Support: Mace and Capa's rivalry at the start of the movie makes it seem like they are fighting over Cassie's attention and/or affection. Mace's backstory makes it clear that Mace does not like Capa. If Mace and Cassie were in fact a couple at the start of the mission, it would be reasonable for Mace to hate Capa for "stealing" Cassie.
Fanfiction Link: HERE

Movie Scenes:
When Cassie sees Mace and Capa fighting, she treats the situation as usual behavior not meant to be taken seriously.

Cassie helps Corazon heal Mace after his jump from the Icarus 1. She then helps Capa out of the golden spacesuit.

Cassie quietly leaves the Earth Room when Mace and Capa are breathing heavily on the floor after their fight.

DELETED SCENE: Cassie looks nervous as the remaining men suit up for their investigation of Icarus 1.
